The picturesque UNESCO World Heritage vineyards of Burgundy are set to host TERRA, an innovative international group exhibition that explores the intricate relationships between contemporary art, heritage, and winemaking. Curated by Jenn Ellis of Apsara Studio, in collaboration with art historian Emie Diamond and produced by Milena Berman of Hautes Côtes, this second iteration of TERRA promises to be a transformative experience for art enthusiasts and wine lovers alike.
Château de Chevigny-en-Valière, Anna Blom, Lost in Responsibilities, 2023, Acrylic, raw pigment, situational debris on canvas, 190 x 150cm
Mia Chaplin, It Curdles, 2024, Oil on canvas, 160 x 200 cm
From October 18 to November 17, 2024, TERRA will breathe new life into three historic, private locations, turning them into immersive galleries. The exhibition will showcase multidisciplinary works by fifty leading and emerging artists, including renowned names such as Wolfgang Tillmans, Mary Webb, Kevin Pinsembert, and Danh Vo. The exhibition's unique approach interweaves various artistic mediums within each space, spanning painting, sculpture, ceramics, and site-specific installations. Visitors will have the opportunity to experience newly commissioned works by Meta Drčar, Wyn-Lyn Tan, Mia Chaplin, and local artist Emmanuelle Rosso, all of which have been created or installed in direct response to TERRA's distinct locations.
TERRA reimagines the traditional exposition model by combining elements of a commercial art exhibition with the curatorial sensibilities of a biennale. The selection process involved both an open call and direct collaboration with artists and galleries, resulting in a diverse lineup that includes a significant number of emerging women artists and next-generation voices from the global South. At the core of TERRA is the concept of terroir, a term rooted in winemaking. In this context, it is interpreted to explore the deep connection between art, place, and history. As visitors journey through the spaces, they are invited to "taste place" in each unique setting, serving as a portal into the art that they temporarily house.
The exhibition unfolds across three core themes: storytelling, liminality, and intimacy. At the Château de Chevigny en Valière, a Napoleonic-era estate and listed heritage site, the essence of storytelling emerges through the architecture. Works by Danh Vo, Wolfgang Tillmans, Niamh O'Malley, and Mia Chaplin explore human narratives and intergenerational dialogues. The Résidence de Moyne-Blandin, a neo-classical 1780s residence, evokes liminality. This listed heritage site, with its peeling patina and preserved wallcoverings, represents a space caught between different periods of time. Here, visitors will encounter jesmonite sculptures by Jodie Carey and an installation by Johanna Tagada Hoffbeck, among other thought-provoking works.

Château de Chevigny-en-Valière, Nino Sarabutra, What will you leave behind?, 2021, Porcelain, Installation: 13 sqm (Total number of skulls: approx. 9,100)
Château de Chevigny-en-Valière, Dahn Vo, 2.2.1861, 2009, Ink on paper, 24 x 3 x H.33 cm
La Maison de Pommard, the former residence of famed winemaker Hubert de Montille, explores the theme of intimacy. Works in this space respond to the building's domestic history and its surrounding gardens, with paintings by Lara Merrett, Nicky Hodge, and Polina Piech evoking the region's deep connection to the earth.
Following the physical exhibition in Burgundy, TERRA will tour to AORA, a virtual space combining art, architecture, and music. This digital iteration will enable global audiences to discover the works featured in TERRA, further expanding the reach and impact of this innovative exhibition. TERRA not only showcases exceptional contemporary art but also celebrates the rich cultural heritage of Burgundy. By bringing together diverse artistic voices and perspectives, the exhibition creates a unique dialogue between the past and present, the local and the global, inviting visitors to explore the interconnectedness of art, place, and history.
