Opera Gallery Paris is set to present a remarkable retrospective, 'André Brasilier: 60 Years of Painting,' celebrating one of France's most distinguished artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. Opening on March 20, 2025, the exhibition showcases over 40 paintings that span six decades of artistic creation, from 1963's 'Le Cadre Noir' to his recent works completed in 2024.
Le Cadre Noir,circa 1963, oil on canvas, 46 x 55 cm | 18.1 x 21.7 in; Forêt bleues, 2018, oil on canvas, 162 x 114 cm | 63.8 x 44.9 in.
At 95, Brasilier's artistic journey continues to captivate audiences with his distinctive blend of abstraction and figurative art. Born in Saumur, France, in 1929, he emerged from a family of artists and later graduated from the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he received the prestigious Grand Prix de Rome in 1953. This honor led to a transformative three-year residency at the Villa Medici in Rome, setting the foundation for his illustrious career.
Marion Petitdidier, Director of Opera Gallery Paris, emphasizes the exhibition's significance: "André has devoted himself to painting for more than six decades with a creative ardor marked by diverse influences, without allowing himself to be confined by any artistic movement." The comprehensive collection presented celebrates Brasilier's enduring pursuit of balance and pure beauty through his signature themes: horses, music, nature, and the presence of his wife and muse, Chantal.
The exhibition particularly highlights Brasilier's profound connection to horses, a motif that appears in more than half of the displayed works. Born in the city of the famous Cadre Noir Equestrian School, Brasilier's representation of horses embodies the beauty, freedom, and energy of the natural world. According to André Kostenevitch, curator at the Hermitage Museum, Brasilier stands as one of the 20th century's most devoted artistic interpreters of these majestic creatures.
Lecture sous les pins, 2015, oil on canvas, 130 x 81 cm | 51.2 x 31.9 in; Chantal à New York, 1977, oil and pencil on canvas, 63 x 55.2 cm | 24.8 x 21.7 in
Music, another recurring theme in Brasilier's work, has been central to his artistic expression since his first exhibition in 1959 at the Drouet gallery in Paris. His romantic portraits, particularly those of his wife Chantal, whom he met in 1957, capture the essence of movement and the passage of time within singular moments. The artist's landscapes possess a dreamlike quality, featuring harmonious scenes where humans and nature coexist peacefully.
Throughout his career, Brasilier has maintained his distinctive style, characterized by a unique color palette that contrasts soft pastels and earth tones with vibrant electric blues and magentas. His work has been celebrated in over 100 solo exhibitions worldwide, including retrospectives at prestigious venues such as The State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg and the Seoul Art Center.
