Jaime Hayon’s solo exhibition Bestial: A Surreal Bestiary of Humanity and Nature

During Miami Art Week, the Mindy Solomon Gallery is unveiling Bestial, a captivating solo exhibition by celebrated Spanish artist and designer Jaime Hayon. Running from November 30, 2024, until January 18, 2025, the exhibition is showcasing 25 years of Hayon’s creative evolution, merging surrealism, folklore, and craftsmanship into a vivid exploration of humanity’s connection to nature. Through large-scale paintings, sculptures, and hand-blown glassworks, Bestial is bringing Hayon’s distinctive vision to life.

Renowned for his seamless interplay of color, form, and material, Hayon is expanding his signature aesthetic in Bestial. At its heart is a fantastical bestiary—life-sized depictions of surreal creatures and flora that are blurring the lines between reality and imagination. These works are offering both whimsy and introspection, addressing themes of nature, humanity, and the instinctual forces shaping existence.

A standout painting, Beast IV, is showcasing Hayon’s mastery of expressive brushwork and bold, colorful forms, capturing a sense of artistic freedom and exploration. Another highlight, the humanoid fiberglass sculpture Walking Punk Bird, created in 2021, is standing at an impressive 170 cm, captivating viewers with its towering presence and precise craftsmanship. Hayon’s monumental acrylic painting, The Castle of Transgressions, is offering a dreamlike vision of a dystopian world populated by colossal creatures whose shadows and shapes are introducing elements of ambiguity and wonder.

Hayon’s artistry is transcending the canvas, with his hand-blown glass busts becoming a focal point of the exhibition. Created in collaboration with traditional Murano artisans, these translucent sculptures are bringing his imagined creatures to life in three-dimensional form. Each piece is echoing the fluidity of Hayon’s painterly brushstrokes, bridging the gap between two-dimensional art and sculptural craftsmanship. “The glass pieces are like taking something straight out of the paintings and giving it a three-dimensional life,” Hayon is explaining. “They capture the imperfections, the movement, and the raw emotions that come from the freedom of the brush.”

The exhibition is also highlighting Hayon’s versatility with various materials, including ceramic, marquetry, and fiberglass. His sculpture Lost, a clumsy, anthropomorphic figure carrying a symbolic bone, is embodying humanity’s ongoing search for meaning and a better future. Reflecting on the piece, Hayon is describing it as “an exploration of human vulnerability, struggles, and the confrontation between beauty, freedom, and our animalistic instincts.”

At its core, Bestial is meditating on the untamed spirit residing within all of us. “Each creature I’ve crafted is a piece of that raw, untamed energy,” Hayon is reflecting. “It’s about connecting to nature, embracing curiosity, and exploring what it means to coexist with the natural world.”

By inviting viewers into a surreal yet deeply human universe, Bestial is reaffirming Jaime Hayon’s status as one of the most innovative and boundary-pushing artists of today. Through fantastical creatures and poignant narratives, he is offering a profound meditation on humanity, nature, and the interconnectedness of life.
