Frieze Seoul 2024: Spotlight on South Korea's Thriving Art Scene


Frieze Seoul 2024, scheduled for September 4-9, is set to be a pivotal event in the global art calendar, featuring exhibitions and presentations from prestigious galleries and museums across South Korea and beyond.

BB&M Gallery will make its Frieze Seoul debut in the Galleries sector, presenting works by Lee Bul, Minouk Lim, Bae Young-whan, Heecheon Kim, and Alex Dodge. Their display will span various mediums, exploring themes of nature versus technology and reality versus virtuality.


As a global partner of Frieze, BMW will unveil the 20th BMW Art Car by American painter Julie Mehretu, marking its Asian debut. BMW will also showcase a new art collaboration featuring two artists designing 14 miniature BMW i7 cars.


Concurrent with Frieze Seoul, several significant art events are taking place across South Korea:


  • The Busan Biennale 2024, themed "Seeing In The Dark," will run from August 17 to October 20, featuring 62 artists and collectives from 36 countries.


  • Art Sonje Center will host "Do Ho Suh: Speculations" from August 17 to November 3, providing an overview of Suh's 'Speculations' series.


  • The 15th Gwangju Biennale will introduce its first-ever Japan Pavilion, presented by Fukuoka City, showcasing Fukuoka-based artists Akiko Utsumi and Terue Yamauchi.


  • Gagosian will make its Korean debut with "Derrick Adams: The Strip" at the Amorepacific headquarters in Seoul from September 3 to October 12, featuring Adams' new works inspired by beauty supply store windows.
