The 2024-2025 art season at Fondation Louis Vuitton marks its 10th anniversary. Its rich exhibition program continues to showcase the influence of modern art masters (Matisse, Rothko, Kelly) on contemporary artists, while evoking the collection's key themes: "meditative," "pop," "expressionist," and "music/sound." Upcoming programs include "Pop Forever, Tom Wesselmann &..." (October 16, 2024 - February 24, 2025), David Hockney exhibition (Spring 2025), and Gerhard Richter exhibition (Autumn 2025).
This exhibition will feature 150 paintings and mixed-media works by Tom Wesselmann, a leading pop art figure, alongside 70 pieces by 35 artists of different generations and nationalities. Through its dual structure as both a retrospective and thematic exhibition, it shares the "sensibility" of pop art from its Dadaist roots in the 1920s to its latest expressions. The exhibition will showcase three pieces from Matsuyama's "Fictional Landscapes" painting series: "Silence Wind Flower Believe" (2022), "Safety Retrospective" (2024), and "Serenity Exhale Protection" (2024), created specifically for this exhibition.
Matsuyama's creative process is born from the fluid combination of his ongoing research into traditional art and the vast collection of images gathered from his daily life. The creation of a single painting or sculpture involves 10 to 20 image references from various times and cultures, all combined by Matsuyama's hand. His works sample various images, including quotes from traditional Japanese, Chinese, and European paintings, fashion magazine cutouts, real products of consumer society, and familiar logos from everyday life.
The resulting massive collection of images, combined so intricately that their sources are indistinguishable at first glance, surrounds us in modern society. While these images might seem familiar, as if we've seen them somewhere before, they rarely connect in our everyday thoughts. Matsuyama's work gives form to the bundle of memories accumulated deep within each of us, presenting them in a tangible way.
