Art Basel has unveiled plans for its 2025 Hong Kong edition, featuring an impressive lineup of 242 galleries from 42 countries and territories. The 2025 edition marks a significant milestone with over half of the participating galleries coming from the Asia-Pacific region, demonstrating Art Basel's commitment to championing Asian artistic voices. The fair welcomes 23 new galleries from diverse locations including India, Australia, Kosovo, Guatemala, Nigeria, South Africa, and various Western countries, bringing fresh perspectives to the international art scene.
In a groundbreaking collaboration, Art Basel will partner with Para Site, Hong Kong's leading independent art institution, to curate the public Film Program. This partnership reflects the fair's dedication to strengthening ties with the local art community. Billy Tang, Executive Director and Curator of Para Site, emphasizes the organization's mission to support cutting-edge artists working across various disciplines, particularly in the evolving field of moving images.
The inaugural MGM Discoveries Art Prize will make its debut at the 2025 edition, offering a USD 50,000 prize to be shared between the winning artist and their gallery. The initiative includes an opportunity for the winner to exhibit their work in Macau, fostering dialogue within the emerging artist community.
A highlight of the event will be the M+ Facade installation, co-commissioned by Art Basel and M+ and presented by UBS. Singaporean artist Ho Tzu Nyen's "Night Charades" will pay tribute to Hong Kong's film culture through AI-recomposed and algorithmically edited visuals.
Angelle Siyang-Le, Director of Art Basel Hong Kong, notes that the 2025 edition reinforces the fair's role as a cultural crossroads in Asia's growing art scene. The recently released Art Basel and UBS Survey of Global Collecting 2024 indicates strong art market performance in Mainland China, suggesting positive prospects for the upcoming fair.
The fair is structured around three main sectors:
Galleries: Featuring 196 top international galleries presenting modern and contemporary works
Discoveries: Showcasing 22 emerging artists and galleries with solo presentations
Insights: Offering 24 curated projects focused on Asian and Asia-Pacific artists
