In the heart of Central Hong Kong, a unique fusion of art, architecture, and ecology has come to life with the opening of the Art Garden at The Henderson. Developed by Henderson Land Development Company Limited in collaboration with the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, this reimagined public space at Lambeth Walk Rest Garden transforms the everyday into the extraordinary—uniting nature-inspired artworks, groundbreaking design, and sustainability efforts.

The Art Garden is more than a tranquil escape in the city; it’s a testament to how urban development can harmonize with creativity and conservation. It sits adjacent to The Henderson, Henderson Land’s flagship commercial tower, and shares its artistic DNA—both designed by the globally renowned Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA). With its flowing, organic curves, the Art Garden becomes the first sculpture garden by ZHA in Asia, offering a rare spatial dialogue between architecture and landscape.
At the core of the garden lies a curated selection of site-specific artworks by internationally acclaimed and local artists. Each piece echoes the themes of nature, sustainability, and community, encouraging visitors to engage with art on a deeper, sensory level.
One of the garden’s centerpiece installations is "Breathing Tree" by American environmental artist Ned Kahn. Making its debut in Hong Kong, this zero-carbon kinetic sculpture stands approximately seven meters tall and responds to natural elements such as wind, water, and mist—capturing the invisible rhythms of the environment through motion and texture.

Another highlight is "Hypnotic Dream" by German digital artist Philipp Frank, the world’s first permanently installed digital light artwork. This mesmerizing piece maps the natural frequencies of a 200-year-old Chorisia tree, translating its unseen energy into pulsating light and immersive soundscapes—a poetic blend of technology and the organic world.
Complementing these international installations is a powerful contribution from local creatives: "The Fractal Forest" by STICKYLINE x Leanna Lee, which runs through 31 May 2025. Inspired by fractal geometry and the golden ratio, this striking sculpture embodies the design philosophy of The Henderson while integrating conservation themes. Its aim? To raise awareness about biodiversity and spark community dialogue on ecological balance in the city.

This commitment to the environment goes beyond artistic symbolism. During the planning and development of the Art Garden, Henderson Land prioritized ecological preservation. The garden has been carefully planted with nectar-rich flora to support butterfly populations—especially important as Central and Admiralty serve as critical butterfly habitats in Hong Kong. Developed in consultation with ecologists, the garden proves that urban spaces can thrive as both cultural and ecological sanctuaries.
The Art Garden at The Henderson is a rare example of multidimensional placemaking—a destination that not only enhances public access to art but also fosters a richer relationship between people and nature. As visitors wander through the space, they’re invited to reflect, interact, and find harmony in the convergence of beauty, innovation, and sustainability.
