Galerie Ceysson & Bénétière, renowned for its global presence from Paris to New York, is set to open its eighth space—and first in Asia—in Tokyo this May. Located in the heart of Ginza, the 325-square-meter gallery marks a significant expansion for the French contemporary art powerhouse.

The inaugural exhibition will spotlight the radical French art movement Supports/Surfaces, which emerged in the 1970s. Known for its experimental use of materials and anti-establishment ethos, the movement challenged traditional notions of painting and presentation. Works by key figures such as Claude Viallat, Daniel Dezeuze, and Louis Cane will be on display from May through August 2025.

LOUIS CANE, Sol/Mur, 10 Juillet 1973 (LC06) , 1973, Oil On Cotton, 250 x 300 x 170 cm

CLAUDE VIALLAT, 1969/022 , 1969, Three-part colorant on faded green tarpaulin, 260 x 98 cm
The new Tokyo space is designed by acclaimed architect and interior designer Sophie Dries, who brings a minimalist, wabi-sabi sensibility to the gallery. The interior combines natural materials like corten steel, iroko wood, and handmade ceramics, blending French and Japanese aesthetics in a refined atmosphere. A custom-designed bookstore and private collector salon add to the immersive experience.
